Time In, Not Out
This past November, I wrote a blog, “Time Out!”
In it, I suggested calling for a national day for everyone in our country to personally take stock of the United States’ current direction(s). And taking my own advice, I did it - myself.
What I came up with - very quickly - was a pretty negative list. And three months later, I stand by the majority of things I wrote down. If I re-wrote the list today, it would be similarly negative, longer, and specific about individuals I beleive are contributing most to America’s wayward course.
What was missing?
It was me.
I can duck getting much more involved than I hve been. After all, I’m, classified as “elderly” - rounding halfway through my eighties. I’m just one guy - living quite comfortably, but without any notable wealth and even less influence.
When it comes to participating in correcting our nation’s course I don’t think that I have been seen as missing in action. Public expectations of me at this point are - understandably - quite low.
But, I think that I miss me.
Not that I ever have felt that I’ve had the answers or ability required to right all wrongs - certainly those at the national and global level. But somehow I’ve found a way to contribute to correcting those that cut close to my bone.
What’s the solution at this point? For me, I believe, it’s to “do small.” That’s better than “time out” or thinking big and doing little.
Things like donating to politicians who make sense and are willing to put themselves out there accordingly. Writing Congressional representatives to let them know how I feel. Attending public protests and and rallies supporting my beleifs. To be honest when asked by acquaintances how I feel about our nation’s course and current political “leadership.”
I may or may not see my hopes materialize. But I’ll feel better and more complete when I end up the day. And maybe have a little more fun in the meantime.
